Recreational Therapy is an immensely important aspect of Canuck Place’s integrated care and counselling support.
Canuck Place ensures that its children have ample opportunities to do what all children want and need to do – play, have fun and just be kids.
Canuck Place has a full-time certified recreational therapist whose work is supported by many volunteers who have a keen interest in recreational and leisure activities.
Exciting and age-appropriate excursions are routinely organized for young children and teens throughout the year. In fact, the interests of the children drive the program, with the children being asked what they would like to do.
Canuck Place has specially equipped vehicles to transport children in wheelchairs to and from events off-site. Canuck Place also has excellent on-site play and recreational facilities and has pioneered a number of innovations.
For example, it boasts Canada’s first fully accessible outdoor playground. It has one of the few Snoezelen Rooms in Canada – a multi-sensory room with a wonderful blend of sights, sounds and textures. Canuck Place also has a hot tub for aquatic therapy.
In the fall of 2003, Canuck Place opened the first Dr. Jay Family Lounge outside of Toronto. A gift from the Dr. Jay Foundation, the room provides a multi-purpose, sensory-rich indoor play centre for children.
